Finding God in the Home

Van Gogh, Chair

Spiritual Sunday

in “The Gods Are Here,” African American author Jean Toomer reminds us that the kingdom of God is to be found here on earth if we open our hearts, our minds, and our souls to it.

Don’t think that you have to travel to a mountaintop to make contact with God. A family chair is all you need to get there.

This is no mountain
But a house,
No rock of solitude
But a family chair,
No wilds
But life appearing
As life anywhere domesticated,
Yet I know the gods are here,
And that if I touch them
I will arise
And take majesty into the kitchen.
